NRS 493 Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal – Human dignity is associated with the well-being of the individuals as dignity determines sense of feeling better or respected. In health care, concept of dignity plays very important role as patients go through most vulnerable and helplessness situations when they are sick and battling a disease (Igai, 2020). The concept of human dignity is highly demonstrated in palliative and end-of life care as elderly people will find it difficult to care for self. However, the issue is associated with other patients including those who are capable of caring for self, but have a minor issue such as deformed face due to accident, on insulin, or any other condition that make them feel low or lead to lower self-esteem (Johnston et al., 2017).

Multi-faceted depression and distress in patients can be addressed by developing better patient-nurse relationship where nurses protect the patients, their dignity, and privacy (Søvde et al., 2019). The process includes patient-centered care, culture-based care, empowering patients, supporting their right decisions, adopting measures to protect their identity, assisting during vulnerable times, no showing disgust, being empathetic, and assuring patients through better care and support regarding outcome (Winter & Winter, 2017). 

It is also important to understand that the concept of human dignity applies to nurses and health care professionals where respect for their work and efforts, providing support to decrease burnout and fatigue, providing incentives, implementing better self-management strategies, and creating a better work environment plays important role in increase sense of personal accomplishment, self-efficacy, and job satisfaction. Dignity and protecting its integrity are important for all the stakeholders included in health care (Benton & Pegoraro, 2020).
