Purpose of the Study:

NR 439 Week 6 Assignment Reading Research Literature (RRL) Worksheet

The purpose of this study was to distinguish between effective and ineffective nurse AEL behaviors as perceived by adult inpatients from an acute care hospital” (Myers, 2020).  The researchers want to determine if active listening (ex, eye contact, facing the patient, facial expressions) between the nurse and the patient could help improve the patients overall experience since nurses are with the patients the most. This is an important study because patient dissatisfaction from perceiving a lack of communication between them and the nurses have been reported on patient surveys which lead to hospitals not getting their full Medicare payments.

Research & Design:

They used two groups in a quantitative comparison to determine if patients noticed the difference between the nurses who exhibited AEL and the ones that did not, if there is a difference in demographics between those who did or did not see AEL from the nurses, and which AEL’s were important to the patients.  This was done using a survey. The study invitation and survey tools were distributed to qualifying patients to their email or home addresses provided at the time of hospital admission” (Myers, 2020).  The quantitative design supported the research by collecting the information from the participants through questions and breaking down the information grouping them by the scores from their answers.

Sample:

“The study setting was a large metropolitan hospital in the south-central region of the United States” (Myers, 2020).  The participants were in an acute care medical and surgical unit and had to be discharged to their homes and it had to be within 15 days.  The population had to be 18 and over and speak and read English and have a valid address or email address.

Data Collection:

“After IRB approvals were obtained, the PI contacted the hospital’s Health System Information Systems Department to initiate daily reports for patients meeting inclusion criteria” (Myers, 2020).  Over 5,000 surveys were sent out, 3,000 through emails and 2,000 were mailed out.  They collected this information over an 8-month time period.  Only 305 surveys were completed and returned.  Depending on their response the participants were either in group A or group B.

Data Analysis:

“To assess if there was a significant difference in the demographic variables of patients in the two groups, cross-tabulation using chi-square test (Pearson chisquare and Cramer’s V) was applied to the categorical data (gender, ethnicity, whether they were a medical or surgical patient, whether English was first language, and if they have had any recent hospital readmissions” (Myers, 2020).  This was important to see if there was a disparity among the population depending on the demographics and the answers.  They were trying to determine if you lived in a certain area you would be treated better.

Limitations:

“Personal contact with the patient before discharge from the hospital to inform them of the study and to expect the survey may have resulted in a higher response rate” (Myers, 2020).   The lack of communication to the participants to let them no they were chosen to complete a survey about their stay led to low responses which can lead to inaccurate numbers.

Findings/Discussion:

“The findings from this study begin the journey in addressing the nursing science gap to understand the complex skill of listening from the patient’s perspective” (Myers,2020).  Is active listening an important part of the nurse-patient experience?  Do patients have a better outcome when discharged into the community?  These questions were not answered therefore more research must be conducted to validate this theory. The theory from this study does show a correlation between AEL and non AEL, but it doesn’t show the overall outcome of them listening to the nurses education which would be a great question.

Reading Research Literature:

It is important to read and understand research literature to understand why the purpose of the study was, for what population, and what effects the outcome had.  We must be able to be able to comprehend its meaning to decide whether or not the practice would be a good fit for the population and facility.  This work sheet helped me break down what I have read into sections so I can clearly pull out the important information.  It became more understandable because sometimes we tend to read things but are not able to obtain and retain the information.
