Section 1: Describe Your Topic and Artifacts

1. Identify the topic you chose for this assignment. Provide some insights on why this topic interests you.

I have chosen the topic1, “Cultural Views on Making Decisions” and in this, I have chosen Option 1, Chapter 4, named “Beating Bias”. 

I have chosen this topic as through social and occupational conventions, culture influences decision-making and problem-solving perspectives. This attitude is frequently expressed in the workplace, where women are unlikely to hold supervisory or management positions and would be excluded from any conversations about resolving an issue. The culture of a person has a significant impact on their cognitive processes and behaviors. Because it has such a strong influence on how individuals see their surroundings, their role in it, and how they make decisions

As per this topic, cultural biasness has always intrigued me and it has both positive and negative effects. Cultural prejudice and biasness can reinforce misconceptions or assumptions about cultures and, in turn, can lead to racial and ethnic profiling. For example, consider a standardized examination that provides an unfair advantage; it may benefit one culture group while disadvantage those who are not members of that cultural group.

2. Describe the artifacts you selected on which you will conduct your cultural analysis. Be sure to identify the cultures.

I have selected two artifacts from the option 1, Chapter 4 “Beating Bias”

1^st one is “The Lion & the Mouse”. This artifact is actually a folk fable about a lion and mouse. The author of the story is Aesop, who most likely lived in ancient Greece. The culture in the story is Ancient Greek Culture.

Kindness is the major cultural element in this fable, more specifically, mercy. As The lion has the mouse in his power but lets her go. This story is over 2,500 years old, In the fable, The mouse inadvertently wakes up the lion, and the lion contemplates murdering her. The mouse assures him that if he lets her go, she may return the favor someday. He does, and at the end of the narrative, he lets her go, hoping she would return the favor someday. He does, and she ends up rescuing him from a trap at the end of the narrative

The 2^nd artifact I selected is “Belling the Cat”. The tale is about a bunch of mice who are debating how to eliminate the threat of a marauding cat. One of them suggests putting a bell around its neck to notify them when it is approaching. The rest cheer the proposal until one mouse wonders who would volunteer to put the bell on the cat. They all make excuses.  The author of the story is Aesop, who most likely lived in ancient Greece. The culture in the story is Ancient Greek Culture.

Lame excuses and proposing impossible decisions are the main cultural aspect of this fable which can be shown by the fable. The story is used to teach the wisdom of evaluating a plan on not only how desirable the outcome would be but also how it can be executed. It provides a moral lesson about the fundamental difference between ideas and their feasibility, and how this affects the value of a given plan

3. Explain how learning about this topic can help you develop a better understanding of the cultures represented in the artifacts.

The 1^st artifact helped me learn about the kindness. Kindness is more than simply a decorative element in medical treatment. It is an essential component of the patient experience. According to research, patients who get compassionate, patient-centered care are more happy and ready to cooperate with their medical treatment, resulting in better patient outcomes. Nursing someone who is dying, for example, may sometimes include just being present and giving company while recognizing the patient’s inevitable death. Kindness entails paying attention to someone else and respecting their circumstances and point of view.

The 2^nd artifact gives me help in making decisions in a way which will give me a positive outcome rather than beating around the bush. It provided me moral lesson about the fundamental difference between ideas and their feasibility. A feasibility study may be the best initial step in determining if a bigger research study is necessary. The fundamental goal of a feasibility study is to determine the viability of future conclusive randomized, controlled trials (RCTs)

Similarities	Differences
Both cultures are equally essential in decision making and, depending on the context, give better decision power.	The financial aspect of a feasibility study is the most essential, while compassion and mercy addresses the moral aspect of the choice.
Both cultures aid in decision-making scenarios and give a greater understanding when forecasting any outcome.	Feasibility helps to restrict the scope of the project by identifying and specifying two or three scenarios or alternatives, but compassion encourages us to choose the decision that benefits the weaker individual.
Both Empathy Feasibility can be demonstrated by paraphrasing what the person has said and reflecting back associated feelings.	Kindness and Empathy helps to resolve conflict more easily, and it enhances collaboration and team work while feasibility culture focuses on profit side rather than moral side of the persons

The cultural artifacts I have identified are “The Lion and the Mouse” and “Belling the Cat”. These artifacts inform us about the culture of Kindness and Feasibility for positive outcome respectively. I have read Chapter 4, Beating Bias as a pre-assignment work to support my analysis. Moreover, I have read scholarly articles and peer-reviewed articles to support my analysis.

Similarities	Differences
Both cultures help in decision making scenarios and provides a better insight while predicting any outcome.	Feasibility aids in narrowing the scope of the project by identifying and defining two or three scenarios or options, but kindness leads us to select the decision that offers the weaker individual an advantage.
Both cultures are equally important in decision making and provides a better decision power depending on the situation	The most important part of a feasibility study is the financial side while kindness deals with the moral side of the decision.

5. Cultural values and beliefs. Explain what your analysis suggests to you about the cultural values and beliefs of each culture and how they approach decision making and/or problem solving.

According to the 1^st cultural scenario, kindness or empathy, in particular, is important for organizational functioning and decision making because it builds connectivity among organizational members and supports cooperative relationships and ethical behavior. Patients who are treated with kindness report emotions of warmth and hospitality, as well as a sense of being at peace and being cured. Caring, which is a crucial component of the healing process, is elicited by nurses who do sincere acts of compassion. Being a Cardinal Nurse entails bringing compassion at the patient’s bedside.

According to the 2^nd cultural scenario, the person or organization conducting the feasibility study may work with the group to find the “best” choice for their particular situation. This is the basis for the decision-making process. By identifying and specifying two or three scenarios or alternatives, the feasibility study assists in reducing the project’s scope. A feasibility analysis is used to assess the viability of a concept, such as verifying that a project is legally, technically, and commercially feasible. It informs us if a project is worthwhile to invest in—in certain circumstances, a project may be impossible to complete.

6. Summarize two main takeaways about the cultures reflected and the insights you gained. Describe what you learned about the cultures reflected and explain how the insights you gained of these two cultures can be used to widen your perspective.

According to 1^st cultural artifact:  

Kindness compels us to make the option that benefits the weaker individual as well as ourselves. It addresses the moral aspect of the decision. When we are kind to others or to ourselves, we can experience beneficial mental and physical changes by decreasing stress and increasing the body’s production of feel-good chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin. 

Kindness and empathy make it easier to overcome conflicts and improves collaboration and teamwork. Kindness is more than just a nicety in medical therapy. It is an important part of the patient experience.

According to 2^nd cultural artifact:

 By identifying and specifying two or three scenarios or possibilities, feasibility assists in reducing the scope of the project. The individual or organization conducting the feasibility study may collaborate with the group to determine the “best” option for their specific scenario. This serves as the foundation for decision-making. 

It advises us if a project is worth it to engage in—in certain occasions, a project may be difficult to construct. It enables us to test the project’s viability before incurring any big costs. The research aims to provide answers to the major issues early in the decision-making process. 

Explain how understanding the cultural similarities and differences that exist between your own culture and these cultures can benefit you in your personal, academic, and professional life. Describe at least two similarities and/or differences between your own cultural values and ideals and that of the one of the cultures you chose for this assignment and explain how these insights can be used to support your professional, academic, and personal endeavors.

If we talk about kindness, Kindness is undervalued in the medical field. Nurses that are compassionate can connect with and care for patients more effectively.  Kindness, according to patients, may even lessen the intensity and duration of the common cold. Healthcare professionals that take the time to assess a patient’s requirements are better equipped to meet those demands. If I’ve ever had to persuade a patient to take their medication on a regular basis, I’m already aware of the critical role compassion plays in enhancing patient outcomes. 

If we discuss about Feasibility, it aids in making judgments that will result in a favorable outcome for nurses rather than beating about the bush. It teaches students the basic distinction between concepts and their practicality. A feasibility study may be the ideal first step in evaluating if a larger research study is required for the creation of a treatment plan. A feasibility study’s primary objective is to assess the possibility of future conclusive randomized, controlled trials (RCTs)

There are many similarities and differences between my cultural values and the cultural values i chose, for example, if we see a scenario of a patient who is on his death bed and cannot be treated, we have to see both cultural values that means we will show kindness to him as well as see our feasibility if it’s a worth time investment for the time or not.
