In a perfect world everyone should have access to healthcare but unfortunately many people do not. Global health emphasizes prevention at the population level and is vital to help maintain global security. Lack of access to healthcare decreases an individual’s quality of life and increases the mortality rate.  There are many factors that contribute to limited access to healthcare. Some of the barriers are: the cost of health insurance and income, the quality of care in some geographic areas, and public program cutbacks. Lowering for insurance costs, improving insurance coverage and providing access to more telehealth visits can help increase the accessibility to healthcare.

I work as a Registered nurse in a school in a low-income area. I come across many students who have medical problems and do not have access to high quality care. Many of them have chronic conditions such as asthma, seizures and allergies. They do not have the necessary medications and supplies needed to treat their conditions. To help them receive the best possible care, we have handouts with different sites that provide free healthcare for students.  Essay NURS FPX 4040 Assessment 1 Nursing Informatics in Health Care SC

                           Identifying Academic Peer-Review Journal articles

I used the Sage journals database engine from Capella to search for articles. I used words such as “limited healthcare access”, “health care access”, “health information systems”, “health information search”, and “health seeking behavior. I also used full text online, peer-reviewed articles, and article published within five years.

Assessing Credibility and relevance of information Sources

To ensure credibility I had to make sure that the articles were published by a relevant author and that they were published within the last five years. I also confirm that the information and examples were included, and that they had clear understanding.

Fanning, E. (2015 April 3). Cultural Health Capital on the margins: Cultural resources for navigating healthcare in communities with limited access. Social Science & Medicine, Volume 133, May 2015, Pages 145-152 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.socscimed.2015.04.006 This article touches on the problems in Texas with Mexicans and access to healthcare. It explains how Mexicans who are not U.S citizens are crossing the boarder to Mexico to obtain medication due to lack of health insurance in Texas. The author cited different policies that are included in the 2010 Affordable Care Act that were implemented to assist with accessing affordable healthcare. Although there are laws in place to provide healthcare for all, there are still issues with obtaining coverage, especially for immigrants in certain areas. The author concluded the article by mentioning Shim’s 2010 notion of Cultural Health Capital (CHC) and how it should be broadened to address the issue of lack of access to healthcare for low income and immigrant communities.

Betregiorgis, Z., Ziad E., Edward, K., Abdul-Aziz, S., Bright, O., Mpho, K., and Sanni, Y. (2021 January 17). Breaking Barriers to Healthcare Access: A Multilevel Analysis of Individual- and Community-Level Factors Affecting Women’s Access to Healthcare Services in Benin. Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2021 Jan; 18(2): 750 The authors in this article explained the different problems with women’s access to healthcare. They also did a study with 15, 928 women to figure out what barriers most affected them when it came to accessing healthcare. Most women had problems with getting permission, going alone, distance to health facility, or getting money for medical prescription. They used graphs to show the percentage of women the barrier that prohibited them from getting the care that they needed. The graph study on (Figure 1), showed that money was the number one problem to access health care. The second barrier was distance to health care facilities. The author concluded that policies should focus more on increasing the level of equality education coverage, and also give more priority to poor regions to have better access to healthcare services.

Liauw, J., Jurguits, J., Nouvet, E.,Dineley, B., and Kearney, H. (May, 2021). Reproductive healthcare in prison: A qualitative study of women’s experiences and perspectives in Ontario, Canada. PLoS One; San Francisco Vol. 16, Iss. 5, (May 2021).https://doi-org.library.capella.edu/10.1371/journal.pone.0251853. Women who were in prison in North America did not have access to the healthcare system which in turn resulted in: less access to contraceptives, less access to prenatal care and high pregnancy complications. This article talked about how the World Health Organization and the United Nations had laws set in place for countries to provide reproductive healthcare, pregnancy care and contraception for woman in prison. The authors conducted a study on women who did not use contraceptive in prison and showed that unintended pregnancy rate increased. From all of the studies done in this article was concluded that all woman wanted better health care access while in prison. Some women even lost their pregnancy due to lack of healthcare access. There are many consequences to not having access to quality healthcare. The quality-of-life decreases. I believe that a women’s best gift is to be able to reproduce. I can only imagine the pain a woman feels from the whole process of losing an unborn child. That alone can lead to depression and lots of other mental issues. This article is a perfect example of how healthcare is an important factor of life itself. Many diseases such as cancer can be undetected and progress and can lead to death. Healthcare should be accessible to all.

Boccuti, C, L. (Mar/Apr2015). Chronic disease and limited access to healthcare still beset American Indians and Alaska Natives. Aging Today Vol.3. Iss.2, (Mar/Apr 2015):5,13. This article is about American Indians and Alaskan Natives who are 65 and older and have difficulty accessing health services. This is the biggest contribution to the spike in the higher rate of medical conditions such as: diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which contributes to short life expectancies. Imagine living your everyday life without knowing that you are hypertensive or diabetic? The disease will just progress. It’s easier to treat a condition or disease when its detected early. The author concluded with explaining how the Affordable Care Act included specific policies designed to improve access to health care for America and Alaska Natives.

Learnings from the Research

Researching information for Limited Access to Healthcare and from the personal experiences that I have had in the medical field I’ve learned that healthcare access is very important for everyone’s life all over the world. This research expanded my knowledge and understanding about healthcare access and made me look at the issue from different perspectives. I saw how it affected women who are incarcerated, different backgrounds and ethnicity, different areas in our country and other countries and different economic statuses. After I was done researching about woman in prison, I concluded that they don’t have access to many benefits, and that they are at a greater risk of early pregnancy termination due to the fact that they don’t have health insurance. I also learned that there are also many barriers that prevent women in general from getting the right medical care that they need. There are laws and programs in place to assist with this problem and still many people go without. In a perfect world everyone would have healthcare coverage but unfortunately this is not a perfect world. There are many great laws put in place to assist with the healthcare issue but there are also many gray areas.
