ANT 100 Module 1 Case
Case Assignment
“Stress, like Einstein’s theory of relativity, is a scientific concept which has suffered from the mixed blessing of being too well known and too little understood.” (Dr Hans Selye)
In this assignment, you will be exploring your own knowledge of stress and how this compares with the current research on short- and long-term effects of stress on the brain.
Take the quiz at the following link:
Test Your Stress IQ. WebMD. Retrieved from https://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/rm-quiz-stress-test
After completing the quiz, read about the most common myths about stress described by the APA at the following links:
https://psychcentral.com/lib/six-myths-about-stress/
Case Questions:
Answer the following questions to complete your Case assignment. Please see the assignment expectations below for additional details on completing your essay for Module 1.
- Describe your quiz results from the APA. How well did you do? Did any of the answers surprise you? Why?
- After viewing the most common myths associated with stress from the APA website, discuss which concept you believe is the most misunderstood. Give support for your reasons (using your own research and sources for support).
- Watch the following video on “How Stress Affects Your Brain.” Learn how chronic stress can affect brain size, structure, and function, right down to the level of your genes.Murgia, M. (n.d.). Ted Talks. How stress affects your brain. Retrieved February 11, 2017, from
https://ed.ted.com/lessons/how-stress-affects-your-brain-madhumita-murgia- Summarize the video’s message in 1-2 paragraphs.
- Do you think cognitive stress has the most influence (or impact) on the body’s
response to stress? Explain.
- How is the brain affected differently by short-term stress versus long-term stress? Provide examples for both types of stress.
- There’s been a lot of research into how chronic stress changes the brain. Do you think stress could be a good thing if managed effectively? Why (in what potential situations?)
Assignment Expectations
Organize this essay assignment using subtitles that summarize the topic from each question above. For example, to answer Question 1, use a descriptive subtitle like the following: My Stress Quiz Results.
Answer each question under the subtitle using complete sentences that relate back to the question. Be sure to use APA formatting throughout your essay, with 1-inch margins, 12-pt font, and double spacing throughout. Include a title page, introduction, answers to the questions with subtitles, and concluding paragraph. Remember to include in-text citations within the body of the essay referencing your resources (i.e., Murray, 2014). Also, be sure to include a reference section at the end of your assignment listing all required readings and any additional resources you used to complete your essay. A helpful guide to writing a quality essay can be found on your TLC Home Page under FAQ/Writing Tips/Student Guide to Writing a High Quality Academic Paper. This guide also provides links to example essays written using APA format.
Direct quotes should be limited and must be designated by quotation marks. Paraphrased ideas must give credit to the original author, for example (Murray, 2014). Direct copying from “homework help” websites will not receive credit. ANT 100 Module 2 The Physiology of Stress
ANT 100 Module 2 Discussion Stress over the Past 50 Years
Discussion Topic
There are many differences between our modern world and the life experienced by our ancestors. The stressors experienced by humans have evolved from basic survival to the challenges of modern society. Scientists believe we can learn from these differences, which may provide us with greater understanding when it comes to stress and how to manage it.
Do you think life is more stressful today than 50 years ago? Why? (Be sure to give examples and cite relevant articles to support your reasoning.)
ANT 100 Module 2 Case
Assignment Overview
Scientists have known for some time that stress can aggravate physical or mental illnesses. We also know that stress is also associated with an increased risk for such mental and physical illnesses such as:
- Depression
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Breast Cancer
- Headache
During the normal stress response, the nervous system and endocrine systems respond. Chronic stress can result in continued response of these systems, especially in regard to hormone release, which can impact other body systems.
Case Assignment
Choose one of the disorders below to research.
- Depression
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Breast Cancer
- Headache
Describe the current research that supports how stress contributes to the effects of the disorder (3 or 4 well-developed paragraphs).
How does your chosen stress-related disorder affect short- and long-term health? Consider impact on endocrine, nervous and other body systems (3 or 4 well-developed paragraphs).
What can be done to prevent and/or treat your chosen stress-related disorder? (2 or 3 well-developed paragraphs).
Draw conclusions about how to avoid these stress-related disorders (1 well-developed paragraph).
ANT 100 Module 2 SLP Quiz
For your Module 2 SLP you will be completing a multiple-choice quiz based on the required readings from Modules 1 and 2, plus the information you have learned from the Module 1 and 2 Lecture Overviews.
REMEMBER: Be sure to take notes as you read through the materials from each module, as your quiz is based on all the material from both Modules 1 and 2. Your quiz consists of 15 randomly generated multiple-choice questions. You will have one hour to complete the quiz. Two attempts are allowed per quiz.
ANT 100 Module 3 Stress and Illness
ANT 100 Module 3 Discussion Stress and the “Type A” Personality
Discussion Topic
In 1950, Dr. Meyer Friedman, a cardiologist, noted that the armrests in his waiting room were worn down, especially on the front edges as if the patients were literally “sitting on the edge of their seats.” From this observation, Dr. Friedman and his colleague gathered data and concluded that patients with heart disease tend to be intensively driven, workaholic-type individuals. They labeled people with these characteristics “Type A” personalities. Individuals that were more laid back and relaxed were labeled as “Type B.”
Take the following personality test to determine if you lean toward a Type A or Type B personality. Discuss and compare your results with your classmates. Do you think there is a strong link between having either of these personality types, stress, and heart disease? Why or why not?

ANT 100 Module 3 Case
Assignment Overview
Recall the video from your Module 1 Case Assignment on how stress affects the brain. Stress not only affects the structure and function of the brain, but its genetic makeup as well. In this module you were introduced to the various effects stress has on each body system, including the reproductive system. New research suggests that experiencing intense psychological trauma may have a genetic impact on a person’s future children. In the following video, Dr. Rachel Yehuda studied the genetic effects in a population of Holocaust survivors and found variations from the norm in both generations for the gene associated with depression and anxiety disorders. The findings imply that children of individuals who experience profound stress in life may be more likely to develop stress or anxiety disorders themselves.

Case Assignment
Answer the following questions in essay format. For additional details, see the Case Assignment directions below.
- How does experiencing trauma affect a person’s life?
- Describe the term epigenetics. How does stress play a role in epigenetics?
- Describe an event in history that could have caused stress-related changes to the next generation (some examples include the Holocaust, 9-11 terrorist attack, the Dutch famine of 1944). Include the disorders these children experienced (such as anxiety, depression, mental disorders, etc).
- Why might it be helpful to know how children will be affected by trauma their parents experienced?
- What kinds of events going on in the world right now could be producing similar effects in future generations?
ANT 100 Module 3 SLP Assignment
There are numerous disorders that have been linked to stress, including depression, anxiety, heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, and immune system disturbances. In addition, stress can have direct effects on the gastrointestinal system by aggravating existing conditions like ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, and ulcerative colitis. Nervous system disorders can be affected by stress, like insomnia and Parkinson’s disease. In fact, it’s hard to think of any disease in which stress cannot play an aggravating role. As you might recall from your Module 1 SLP Assignment, there are four major categories of stress symptoms: cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and physical. In this Module’s assignment, you will build on this knowledge by exploring disorders that are associated with these categories.
SLP Assignment
For this SLP assignment, you will choose one disorder from the four major categories of stress (cognitive, physical, behavioral, or emotional) as shown in the table below. Your assignment will be to develop a PowerPoint presentation that includes the following:
Slide 1
Title Slide with Name, Course, and Date
Slide 2 – Introduction
Topics to be covered in outline form
Slides 3-5
Choose one disorder from the table above. Briefly describe your chosen disorder. What are the symptoms of your chosen disorder? How does stress affect/cause/manifest/enhance this condition? How many people are affected by the disorder? Describe how your chosen disorder is associated with its main category of stress from the table (i.e., how is insomnia sometimes a cognitive condition?).
Slide 6
Describe how your chosen disorder overlaps with the other categories of stress listed from the table (i.e., obesity may be influenced by behavioral styles such as overeating in reaction to stress, but there may be emotional components as well).
Slides 7-8
Choose and describe one occupation at high risk for stress (firefighter, policeman, trauma nurse, service member, air traffic controller, etc). What are the main causes for your chosen occupation’s stress? How does this stress affect their ability to perform? (Be sure to incorporate aspects of physical, emotional, cognitive, and/or behavioral functions). Include an image representing your chosen occupation.
Slide 9 – Conclusion
Summarize your project findings.

As you read the articles about stressors and coping, think about how you currently deal with stressors in your life. For your initial response, discuss and evaluate how well you deal with the top 3 stressors in your life.
Finally, choose a stress-coping technique not discussed in the Module 4 lecture material and write a summary sharing what you learned about this technique and its effectiveness on stress management.
ANT 100 Module 4 Discussion Self-Reflection
Discussion Topic
Prepare a Reflective Essay in which you address each of the following items:
In this final Discussion, reflect on what you have learned throughout this course.
- Which topics and concepts in this course have been most interesting to you in learning more about how stress affects the body?
- Which class activities or assignments helped you learn the most? The least?
- What would you like to learn more about (today, this week, this year, etc)?
- How can you take what you have learned about the physiology of stress and stress management and apply it to your own life?
After responding to the Reflective Discussion above, please complete an anonymous Course Evaluation Survey. Instructors are not able to view course evaluation reports until after the grade submission period is over. Thank you for your feedback.
ANT 100 Module 4 Case
Case Assignment
Reducing your stress can help you maintain a healthy mind and body. Most stress-management experts say real stress reduction requires significant skill and discipline beyond simply becoming aware of different methods. Additionally, not everyone responds to various stress-reduction techniques in the same way. Through experimentation, it is possible to find various ways to incorporate stress management into one’s life in order to balance stress with more positive experiences.
For this assignment, you will research two examples of stress-reduction techniques and develop a PowerPoint presentation that includes the following:
Slide 1
Title Slide with Name, Course, and Date
Slide 2 – Introduction
Topics to be covered in outline form
Slide 3
Choose two different stress-management techniques (some examples were discussed in the lecture material and readings or you may research examples of your own). Briefly define each stress- management technique and provide an image representing each.
Slide 4
Discuss how each technique is performed, how often, etc. (Consider adding a video link to demonstrate).
Slide 5
How does it work?: Exactly how does it relieve stress? What effects does it have on the body (physiologically) or mind (psychologically) or both?
Slides 6-8
Evaluate each technique: Does it work (provide support)? Who says it works? Who says it doesn’t? What are the strengths and weaknesses? Would you use it? Why or why not?
Slide 9 – Conclusion
Summarize your project findings.
